IRDAI vide Circular Ref. IRDAI/INV/CIR/16/01//2023 dated January 13, 2022 issued a Circular on Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) — Categorisation and Classification

Major highlights of the Circular

• The Circular captures insights on the Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) which are proposed to be issued in Budget 2022-23 by Government of India.
• Insurers are encouraged to consider investing in Sovereign-Green Bonds from the perspective of their contribution in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives and to diversify their infrastructure investment portfolio.
• IRDAI has clarified that investment in such Bonds shall be treated as “Investment in Infrastructure” and shall be classified as “Central Government Securities”.
