The IRDAI (“Authority”) has issued an advisory to all insurers, reinsurers, the Life Insurance Council, and the General Insurance Council following the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 into the BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad on 12th June 2025, which claimed 242 lives.

The key points of the advisory issued by the Authority are as follows:
  1. Insurers shall obtain an authenticated list of the victims of the aircraft crash and the persons affected at the BJ Medical College hostel from the relevant authorities.
  2. Insurers shall verify policy details available in their databases relating to Overseas Medical Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance, and Life Insurance policies and initiate a fast-track claims settlement process for the affected policyholders.
    • Waive the requirement for documents such as FIRs or post-mortem reports where official confirmation from the competent authorities is available.
    • Settle claims in favour of the nominee recorded in the respective insurance policy.
    • Ensure that no claim is denied or delayed due to procedural formalities where the deceased has been officially confirmed in the passenger list or among the affected persons at the crash site.
  3. The Life Insurance Council and the General Insurance Council shall jointly establish a facilitation cell at the hospital where the victims are receiving treatment. The Joint Cell shall provide immediate assistance to the affected individuals and facilitate prompt communication with insurers regarding insurance claims and related matters.
  4. Every insurer shall nominate a senior-level Nodal Officer who will coordinate with the Joint Cell and be responsible for ensuring the speedy settlement of claims on behalf of the respective insurance company.
  5. Insurers shall submit a report to the Authority beginning 16th June 2025 on a weekly basis for one month, or for such further period as may be directed by the Authority, in the prescribed reporting formats.
  6. The Life Insurance Council and the General Insurance Council shall publish insurer-wise summary claim settlement data on their respective websites.
