Lokanath P. Kar is the Founder of ElpeeCo. and is widely regarded as an authority in financial services law, corporate governance, regulatory practice, and institutional risk management. With more than 30 years of professional experience, he brings together extensive litigation expertise, in-house counsel leadership, and deep engagement with regulatory institutions across the insurance and financial services ecosystem.
Prior to establishing ElpeeCo. in 2022, Mr. Kar served as Chief Legal and Principal Compliance Officer at ICICI Lombard for nearly two decades, leading the organisation’s legal, regulatory, and compliance functions through several landmark developments that significantly shaped the Indian insurance industry. His earlier experience, both as in-house counsel with prominent financial services organisations and as a practising lawyer in Delhi, provides him with a broad and credible perspective on India’s evolving business and regulatory environment.
Before founding ElpeeCo., Mr. Kar spent close to two decades at ICICI Lombard General Insurance, leading the organisation’s legal and compliance functions through several industry-defining milestones, including India’s first-ever IPO of a non-life insurer, the launch of the first insurance office in GIFT City, the first listing of subordinate debt by an insurer, and India’s first major merger of two general insurance companies.
Over the course of his career, he has played an active role in shaping the regulatory landscape of the Indian insurance sector through participation in industry and regulatory committees, contributing to important policy areas including corporate governance, micro-insurance, title insurance, solvency frameworks, motor third-party insurance, and insurtech and emerging regulatory domains.
He has also advised prominent industry and institutional bodies including the General Insurance Council, FICCI, and the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Mr. Kar has contributed extensively to discussions on key industry and regulatory issues through articles and commentary in leading publications, including the International In-house Counsel Journal, IRDA Journal, Consultants Review, Economic Times, Business Standard, and Mint Money. His writing spans economics, business strategy, legal and regulatory frameworks, risk management, and compliance. His thought leadership and influence within the legal and insurance community are reflected in numerous recognitions, distinctions, and domestic as well as international awards.
